It is thought that the county was named after the Native American tribe Chucuines o Sonomas. When translated, Sonoma means "Valley of the Moon."
The largest cities in Sonoma County are Santa Rosa, Petaluma, Rohnert Park, and Windsor. According to the 2010 U.S. Census, approximately 76% of the population is White, 24% is Hispanic, 3.8% is Asian, and 1.6% is African American. The main industries in the county are winemaking and tourism. The cost of living in Sonoma County is 144.3 and the average in the country is 100. The median income for a household is $62,368 and about 9% of the population lives below the poverty line.
