Waste Management Employee Dies in Jobsite Accident

A 66-year old Waste Management employee died after being struck by a heavy piece of equipment at a transfer station in San Leandro. The 13-year employee, later identified as Evangelina Macias worked in the material recovery department at the transfer station, located at 2615 Davis Street in San Leandro.

The victim was wearing all of the prescribed safety gear (including her yellow vest and hardhat) at the time of the accident and was engaged in her normal work activities of directing vehicles to the public drop off area. The driver of the loader that caused her death was a 22-year employee. California Occupational Safety and Health Administration (Cal OSHA) has initiated an investigation into the accident, and Waste Management is conducting its own internal investigation. The Cal/OSHA Spokesman said that the investigation could take up to 6 months to complete.
