The San Mateo County Government is run by a Board of Supervisors, each representing one of the five districts. Of the 357,514 voters in San Mateo County, approximately 50% are Democratic, 23% are Republican, 22% declined to state which party they supported, and 3.8% were with other parties. The county is part of the 12 th and 14 th congressional districts.

As of January of 2011, the cost of living in San Mateo County was indexed at 151.9. This is high considering the average in the U.S. is 100. The median age for a resident in San Mateo County is 36.8 as compared to the median age in California which is 33.3. Approximately 49.4% of the population is male and 50.6% is female. The average size of a household in San Mateo County is 2.7 people and the median income per household is $85,213.
