Reported in the New York Times on January 23, 2011
Nearly three months after the tragic death of Mathieu Lefevre, his family has finally obtained the police’s investigation file.
Mathieu (who was a Canadian citizen visiting Brooklyn, New York) was riding a bicycle when he was struck by a crane truck three months ago. According to the report, which was just recently released by the NYPD, the truck driver failed to signal for a right turn as Mathieu tried to pass the truck. Mathieu was struck by the crane truck which dragged him 40 feet and dragged his bicycle for 130 feet. Mathieu died from the catastrophic injuries that he sustained during this accident.
After the incident, the Lefevre family filed a Freedom Of Information Act (FOIA) lawsuit to obtain the police’s report. After three months in court, the Lefevre family finally prevailed and was given the report for their son’s death. Upon reading the report, the Lefevre family discovered that the report had minimal photos because the investigator’s camera had broken.
