The driver who struck and killed a 63-year-old man as he crossed an East San Jose street Saturday night may not have seen the victim until it was too late to avoid the crash, police said.

However, the cause of the 9:05 p.m. collision on Jackson Avenue, just south of Alum Rock Avenue, is still under investigation, said San Jose police Sgt. Jason Dwyer. Drugs and alcohol don’t appear to be a factor for the driver in the crash, a 49-year-old man.

The victim, whose name has not yet been released, was rushed to a hospital but died of his injuries at 9:37 p.m., Dwyer said. Police initially said officers went to the crash scene at 9:59 p.m.

It appears the victim was walking across Jackson when he was struck by a gray 1991 Toyota Camry. Polcie have not arrested or cited the Toyota driver, who stayed at the site of the crash and cooperated with investigators, Dwyer said.

Traffic in the area was interrupted for several hours as police investigated the collision.
