Information on Contra Costa

Need a San Jose personal injury attorney in Contra Costa? Contra Costa is located in the San Francisco Bay Area and is a vastly suburban area. This was certainly not always the case. Before European colonization, Native American nomadic tribes roamed the region. The first settlers from Europe were the Spanish. Although they did not found a Mission there as they did in other parts of the Bay Area, they did establish a military post in 1776. The area was very influenced by the Spanish with grants of land being given to settlers by the King of Spain. After the Mexican War of Independence in 1821, the land came under new ownership. When California became a state in 1850, Contra Costa was one of its 27 original counties.

The area covers approximately 802.15 square miles and is bordered by Alameda, San Francisco Bay, San Pablo Bay, and the San Joaquin River. Today, Contra Costa has an impressive population of over 1,049,025. Approximately 58% of the population is White, 24.4% are Hispanic, 14.4% are Asian, and 8.9% are African-American. The communities in Contra Costa are mostly Democratic and the county is located in the 7th, 10th, and 11th congressional districts.

Ever since 2008, the county has seen budget problems. One of the things which led to these fiscal problems was the health insurance and retirement benefits that were given to civil servants, police, medical professionals, etc. Another problem involved property where distressed properties were allowed to be sold after a lower assessment. As of 2011, the county was approximately $45 million behind. The county is made up of “edge cities” like Walnut Creek where people who work in San Francisco live and commute to and from.
