Smoked Salmon Blamed for Salmonella

Hundreds of people in the Netherlands and the United States have been sickened by salmonella, and the illness is being linked to some salmon that was shipped to both countries. Since the incidents erupted, the company that sold the salmon has issued a recall. The National Institute for Public Health and the Environment was able to confirm that the salmon came from a Dutch company called Foppen that provides fish to Dutch supermarkets and chains in the United States. The institute said that about 200 people have reported sickness in the Netherlands. More than 100 people have complained of similar symptoms after eating the fish in the United States.

Peg Perego is recalling hundreds of thousands of strollers because children can become trapped and strangle between the trays on them. The company stated that entrapment and strangulation can take place when the child is not harnessed into the stroller. If unharnessed, the child can pass through the opening between the tray and the seat bottom; which can cause the child's neck and head to become trapped by the tray.

Pit Bull Attack at Starbucks

On Thursday July 12, 2012 at around 7:30 a.m. at the Starbucks on Wren Avenue and First Street, a woman and her small dog were mauled by a pitbull that had gotten loose. The small dog that was attacked sustained serious injuries and had to be euthanized. The owner, who was also attacked, sustained serious injuries, though they are not life-threatening.

Accident on Highway 25

An 18-year-old driver involved in a major accident on Highway 25 and Wright Road in Hollister has passed away. On the day of the accident, the teen attempted to turn from Wright Road onto Highway 25. He was T-boned by another vehicle traveling southbound on Highway 25. The impact smashed in the teen's front passenger seat. CHP found him unconscious behind the wheel. The other vehicle was driven by a 27-year old mother, who had her children with her at the time of the accident. It was said that she was unable to stop in time in order to avoid the collision.

Johnson & Johnson Reserve $600 Million of Second Quarter Earnings for Settlement

The pharmaceutical giant Johnson & Johnson has set aside $600 million in anticipation of a possible settlement. The plaintiffs have alleged that Johnson & Johnson gave kickbacks to nursing homes that would purchase the Johnson & Johnson anti-psychotic medications, Risperdal and Invega as well as the respiratory drug Natrector. It is speculated that the $600 million is being used to finance a $2.2 billion dollar settlement.
